A Wuffings' Who was Whom

Annotated genealogical information on the Wuffings for the world-wide web compiled by Dr Sam Newton, Eostremonaþ, AD1998.

The information is based primarily on two sources and is presented three sections:

Section A gives the order of pedigree names contained in the upper reaches of the genealogy, descending from the ancestral father-god Woden to the eponymous personification of the family totem, Wuffa, 'Little Wolf'.
These names may be regarded as deriving from pre- or proto-historical dynastic legend, originally preserved in Old English genealogical poetry. Some of the names are alliteratively grouped, and may refer to different origin-myths. The possible meaning of some of the more obscure names is suggested. Click here for Section A of the Wuffing Genealogy.

Section B presents information on the more solidly historical Wuffings. Strictly speaking, the horizon of historical credibility extends no further than the generation of Rædwald. Genealogical relations can be reasonably ascertained down to the death of Ælfwald (AD749).
All of the names in Section B are given in their Old English forms and are linked to individual pages summarising what is known or can be deduced about them and their bearers, with references. Click here to go to the historical section [Section B] of the Wuffing genealogy.

Section C provides a Regnal List of the later Wuffing Kings, from the death of Ælfwald [749] down to the fall of the last of the Wuffings, St Edmund (20th Nov. 869). Click here for Section C.
